Artist’s Statement
In February I was asked to paint friends of ours into a vintage landscape painting which they had found in the garbage and loved. It was an opportunity to add something special and unexpected to the piece. I enjoyed the project and felt inspired.
As we were preparing to move our studio to its new home, I found random pieces of thrift store art (often mass-produced decor from mid-to-late 20th century) we had collected over the years. I started covering over parts of the existing images to make them into something new.
I have always been inspired by the work of artist David Irvine (and we are thrilled own a piece); he redirects existing paintings, often adding pop culture imagery to them. I wanted to do something a little different but with a similar spirit.

My makeover work usually involves covering something up in found images, and adding new elements of whimsy and humour. I’m interested in the juxtaposition of things you wouldn’t expect together, and enjoy the absurdity this often creates.
Messing with the serenity of cheesy landscapes, dressing up animals in sweaters and introducing inappropriate flora has got my creativity flowing in new directions. And that feels great.
